On Thursday, January 5, 2012, the U.S. EPA Administrator, Lisa Jackson, met with Alterna President, Nick Gunia, to tour the Brownsville Transit Village project site, a 466 unit affordable housing development in Miami, where Alterna supplied all of the project’s high efficiency plumbing fixtures. Alterna’s high efficiency plumbing fixtures, which included Caroma dual flush toilets and Fluid high efficiency faucets, are estimated to save the project over 5 million gallons of water annually and approximately $50,000 in utility costs each year. Subsequent to the tour, Alterna and the project developer, Carlisle Development Group, hosted a business roundtable, where local green business leaders discussed local environmental issues and challenges, including water conservation, with the EPA Administrator. Also in attendance for the tour and roundtable were EPA Region 4 Administrator Gwen Keyes Fleming and U.S. Congresswoman Frederica Wilson of the 17th District of Florida, where the Brownsville Transit Village Project is located.
After the event with Administrator Jackson, Alterna President Nick Gunia remarked, “As a US EPA WaterSense program partner since 2008, it was a dream come true for our work at Brownsville Transit Village to be recognized by the head of the U.S. EPA.” The event was also widely covered in local, regional and national press.

For the third consecutive year, Alterna Corp. exhibited at the MiaGreen Expo and Conference, which was held at the Miami Beach Convention Center. This year’s exhibit was the largest booth that Alterna has ever done at 400 square feet! For the second consecutive year, Alterna exhibited at the Florida Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (FAHRO) 2010 Annual Convention and Trade Show, which took place at the Hilton Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando on August 10-12th. Over 200 affordable and government housing officials from across the State of Florida attended the FAHRO show.
At the event, Alterna featured its water conservation products and solutions, including Caroma dual flush toilets and SSI Tapware high efficiency faucets and shower systems. These products help housing authorities save money on their water, energy and maintenance costs, thereby ensuring a high return on investment. For this year’s exhibit, Alterna showcased stunning bathroom vanities by Greenworks Cabinetry, the first-ever line of sustainable bathroom furniture. The vanities featured virtually all of Alterna’s products, including Richlite paper composite countertops, Plyboo and Durapalm bamboo and coconut palm plywood respectively, and Fluid high efficiency faucets. For this year’s exhibit, Alterna launched the stunning new Fluid line of high efficiency faucets, showers systems and bathroom accessories. We are proud to announce that Alterna sponsored the June monthly member meeting of the Miami-Dade and Keys Branch of the South Florida Chapter of the USGBC. The meeting featured a special walking tour of the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat and the first sports arena of its kind to be LEED for Existing Buildings certified. In April 2009, USGBC President, CEO and Founding Chairman, Rick Fedrizzi, was at the Arena, along with City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and other local leaders, to congratulate and present a LEED plaque to Arena staff. During the tour, the approximately 150 attendees learned about the Arena’s green features and LEED certification process from the facilities staff at the Arena. Attendees even had the opportunity to walk out onto the basketball court. Alterna team members had a table at the event, where they showcased high efficiency plumbing fixtures from Caroma and LED lighting solutions from Revlite.
Alterna Corp. is proud to announce it has earned a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification. FSC promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. Alterna’s chain of custody certification was achieved after a rigorous third party audit of its distribution center.
Currently, Alterna is an exclusive distributor of Smith and Fong’s Plyboo, the only FSC certified bamboo flooring and plywood in the world. Alterna’s Miami warehouse will now be able to distribute FSC Plyboo products and other FSC certified products to its customers, and ensure a clear chain of custody. FSC certified wood is the only allowable certification for both commercial and residential LEEDTM Projects, the green building certification program of the USGBC.

The panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, 8th from 11:00 – 12:30 following the Keynote speaker, Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman of the USGBC.
Over 250 professionals attended the first annual South Florida Green Lodging Workshop on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The City of Miami Beach and its Sustainability Committee in participation with Miami-Dade County presented the workshop, which included a vendor tradeshow and which was the first of its kind in South Florida. Alterna was proud to be one of over 30 exhibitors at the tradeshow, as well as a “Three Star” sponsor for the workshop alongside the South Florida Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Caroma and Ecotel Consulting.
The Mayor for the City of Miami Beach, Matti Herrera-Bower, and Commissioner and Sustainability Committee Chair, Saul Gross, welcomed workshop attendees and expressed their support for green lodging practices in local hotels. Event speakers included Dave Stipanuk, Professor Emeritus of the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, Maribel Balbin, the Conservation Director for Miami-Dade Water and Sewer and Dr. Daniel Meeroff of FAU. Alterna President, Nick Gunia, was the MC of the workshop and he also delivered a talk on indoor water conservation opportunities for hotels.
