Population growth and pervasive drought conditions are causing severe water shortages and long term supply issues throughout the territories we serve, but especially in the Southeast U.S. In response to these challenges, Alterna is committed to promoting water conservation through the use of high efficiency plumbing fixtures, including high efficiency toilets and showerheads. Given the gravity of the problem, we scoured the marketplace in 2007 for the most innovative water conserving fixtures and soon discovered Caroma, the world leader in dual flush toilet technology.
Founded in 1941, Caroma is Australia’s foremost designer and manufacturer of plumbing fixtures and bathroom products. Since Australia is the driest inhabitable continent on the planet, Caroma has been focused on finding new ways to save water in the bathroom for decades.
Realizing the strategic importance of the toilet, the biggest consumer of water in residential or commercial settings, Caroma dedicated itself to producing the most efficient toilets in the world. In the 1980s, the company pioneered the two button dual flush toilet, which initially featured a 0.8 gallon (3 liter) half flush for liquid waste and a 1.6 gallon (6 liter) full flush for solid waste, averaging just below 1.0 gallon per flush (assuming a 4:1 half to full flush ratio). This technology set the industry standard for years to come, saving 40-75% compared to traditional single flush toilets.
Caroma did not stop there, however, as it continued to push the boundaries of water conservation throughout the 1990s. Just in time for the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Caroma launched Smartflush® dual flush toilets, which further reduced the volume of the full flush to only 1.28 gallons (4.5 liters) for an average below 0.9 gallon per flush.
Caroma’s Smartflush toilets, such as the Sydney Smart series, continue to be the most efficient dual flush toilets on the market today. With over 50 U.S. EPA WaterSense labeled toilets, Caroma offers more high efficiency toilets than any manufacturer in the world, not to mention the widest selection of dual flush toilets available.
Although Caroma toilets are best-known for their amazing efficiency, they also deliver legendary performance thanks to the unique design of Caroma toilet bowls. Unlike the 2-3" diameter, serpentine trapway found in most siphonic toilet bowls, Caroma toilets feature an Industry-leading 4" diameter trapway and a much shorter path to the drain.
For this reason, Caroma toilets are virtually impossible to clog, thereby delivering utility and maintenance savings.
